Elgin is a picturesque river city that has recently gone through much revitalization and today ranks as one of the most rapid growing cities in Illinois. Founded in April of 1835, Elgin was established by James T. Gifford and his brother Hezekiah Gifford, two brothers from New York who had heard tales of this area nestled along a river and ripe for settlement. It wasn't until 1849 when the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad reached Elgin linking the growing town to Chicago and other urban centers.
Early Elgin had achieved its fame for the butter and dairy goods it sold to the city of Chicago. Gail Borden established a condensed milk factory in 1866, and today the state of the art newly constructed Elgin Library was named in his honor. The Elgin Watch Company became the real fame winner for Elgin operating from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. At one point it was the largest producer of fine watches in the United States and the clocks at Chicago's Union Station still have the Elgin name.
Still nestled along the Fox River, Elgin today offers all that a big city has to offer through an alive and vibrant downtown area. In the city's downtown corridor new projects from Fountain Square and The Center to Festival Park and Water Street Place are changing the face of the city. These new developments provide residents and guests with a destination for shopping, restaurants, culture and nightlife. Elgin has recently been selected by BestLife Magazine as one of the best places in the country to raise a family.
As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 94,487, making it the eighth-largest city in Illinois. The Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission forecasts Elgin will have a population of 167,375 in 2030. Take a peek at all that Elgin has to offer and you'll quickly learn why the city is growing so fast...because "it's happening here."
